CGIAR Research Program Officer

Location: Montpellier, France
Duration: Three years (renewable)
Reports to: Chief Scientific Officer
Direct Supervision of: Science team support staff.
Works with: CRP Steering teams and Consortium Office, including consultants.

In 2008, the CGIAR launched its Change Management Initiative to identify how best to adapt to and anticipate global changes and challenges, such as food price volatility, more extreme weather arising from climate change and the global financial crisis. This initiative culminated in the CGIAR’s decision in December 2008 to adopt a new business model that forms a Consortium of International Agricultural Centres, guided by a new vision and strategic results framework, executed through system research programmes and consortium platforms. This change enables the CGIAR to increase and sustain long-term support for agricultural research, to improve donor coordination and funding, to improve efficiency and impact, and to fulfil its mandate to fight poverty and hunger while conserving the environment.

The core of the new system is a partnership between a Consortium that unites 15 international agricultural research Centres with 8,000 staff based in over 50 countries and a new Fund, built on a common vision of mobilizing agricultural research to reduce poverty and hunger, improve human health and nutrition, and enhance sustainable management of natural resources in the developing world. The CGIAR Consortium Board recently appointed its inaugural CEO. The CEO and the Board are strengthening the Consortium Office to rise to the challenge of an improved and more effective implementation of the CGIAR new system level research agenda.

The new CGIAR will conduct its research through results-based and focused CGIAR Research Programmes (CRP’s) which entail a large range of partnerships. Each CRP is led by a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional steering team that guides, coordinates and manages all the components of the CRPs. The Consortium Office has the responsibility to identify complementarities, synergies, and best practice among CRP’s, as well as identifying gaps, overlaps and areas for improvement. In addition, the Consortium Office identifies linkages with regional, national and donor priorities for impact delivery and it reports to donors on progress and challenges in the CRPs.

The CGIAR Consortium Office is now seeking two dynamic, innovative Program Officers to coordinate and monitor the activities of the CGIAR Research Programs that are being created.
